H-DNL teams compete in season-opening track meet at Redwood Bowl

The Arcata boys and Eureka girls were the big winners in the season opening high school track and field meet at the Redwood Bowl on Wednesday afternoon.

The Tigers took first place in six of the 10 boys events, while the Loggers took top spot in four of the seven girls events.

Seven teams traveled to Cal Poly Humboldt for the meet, with Anderson, Ferndale, Fortuna, McKinleyville and St. Bernard’s joining Arcata and Eureka.

Junior Isabella Claussen was a double winner for the Eureka girls, placing first in both the shot put and discus.

Anderson’s Payton Ford placed second to Claussen in the shot put and third in the discus, with McKinleyville’s Syriah George second in the discus and Arcata’s Rory Bickmore third in the shot put.

Claussen’s teammate, senior Emily Pesch, also impressed in the season opener and took first in the high jump, followed by Arcata’s Quincy Collins and Eureka’s Sophie Grimmett.

Grimmett also enjoy dsuccess in the girls DMR 4000 meters relay, teaming with Claire Gast, Miriam Mende and Sequoia Ashby to place first.

The Arcata foursome of Anna McLaughlin, Ada Kinziger, Nicole Nozawa and Bella DeCarli took first in the SMR 800m relay, while Fortuna’s Allie Cox quickly adjusted from the basketball court to the track by placing first in the 100m.

Her teammate Madison Ruiz was second, followed by Arcata’s Zalayshia Velazquez in third.

And rounding out the girls competition, Arcata’s Soquel MacDonald was first across the finish line in the 1600m, followed by Fortuna’s Gabby Crosswhite in second and McKinleyville’s MaryAnn Som in third.

In the boys competition, meanwhile, Ferndale speedster Isaak Kasso placed first in the 100m, followed by Fortuna’s Kavi Bolden and Arcata’s Palavi Vainuku.

Vainuku, a freshman, enjoyed a successful debut at the high school level and was a double winner on the day.

Vainuku was a part of the Arcata 4x200m relay team, which beat Eureka for the win, and also teamed with Jordan Gaskell, Ohsoo Kwon and Eoin McGoldrick to win the SMR 800m relay.

McGoldrick was a three-time winner on the day, including the 4x200m team and the DMR 4000m, joining Nathan Whitney, Evan Posting and Reece Thompson in the latter. 

Eureka’s Everett Docherty, Chase Jimenez, Emmitt Armstrong and Marvin Barroso took first in the 4x800m relay, while Arcata’s Skyler Collenberg won both the shot put and discus.

McKinleyville’s Nick Maher placed second in both the shot put and discus, while Anderson’s Gavin Lockhart placed third in the shot put and Eureka’s Eddie Gonzalez was third in the discus.

Fortuna’s Russell Pascascio also adapted quickly from basketball and won the high jump, while also placing second in the long jump, the latter of which was won by Eureka’s Elias Ladika.

Arcata’s Eric Jackson placed second in the high jump, followed y Fortuna’s Alfonso Medina in third, while Kasso placed third in the long jump.

And rounding out the day’s action, Arcata’s Whitney had his second win of the day in the 1600m, followed by Thompson and Poston, as the Tigers took the top eight spots in the race.
