Vigil’s low score leads Loggers to team win on opening day

Eureka junior Talon Vigil had the low round of the day in the opening round of the H-DNL boys golf season at Beau Pre on Thursday.

Vigil shot a 76 in nice conditions to beat the field by three strokes and lead the Loggers to a team victory.

McKinleyville’s Jake Gardner had the second best round of the day with a 79, followed by Arcata’s Joaquin Ponce and St. Bernard’s Jack Kramer, who both shot an 81.

Vigil’s teammate Jerome Lyons had the fifth best round of the day with an 83, as four different schools were represented in the top four.

Eureka took the team win by just two strokes with a combined round of 339, with Ponce and the Arcata Tigers just two strokes back in a what an exciting and close battle.

Andrew Stewart shot an 89 to give the Eureka boys three golfers under 90 for the day.

The Tigers had four golfers break 90.

In addition to Ponce, teammates Mason Alway (84), Zane Slattery (87) and Lucas Wemerbley (89) all enjoyed strong starts to the new season.

Fortuna’s Dawson McWhorter also impressed with a round of 86 to pace the Huskies, while Kai Russell led the Del Norte Warriors with a 91, Braeden Rice led Ferndale with a 110 and Littlefoot Williams led Hoopa with a 124.

Also impressing on opening day were Eureka’s Julian Goodman (91), McKinleyville’s Carter Reeves (91), Fortuna’s Rocklin Austrus (94).
