By Ray Hamill — After one of the most memorable girls basketball seasons we’ve ever seen here on the North Coast, seven H-DNL girls have been nominated for the CalHiSports all-state teams.

The nominations were announced on Thursday.

Four H-DNL boys were also nominated for the CalHiSports boys all-state teams last week.

Included in the list of nominees are a pair of state champions from St. Bernard’s, as well two players from Eureka’s Big 5 and Dick Niclai tournament double championship team.

Six of the nine H-DNL schools to field varsity basketball teams — Arcata, Del Norte, Eureka, Hoopa, South Fork and St. Bernard’s — are represented on the prestigious lists.

St. Bernard’s senior Madelyn Shanahan and junior Laila Florvilus have been nominated just days after they led the Crusaders to an historic Division-4 state championship.

Joining them among the 87 girls nominated from the North Coast Section are Eureka seniors Isis Poteet and Kaitlin Giacone, who were named co-MVPs of the Big 5 this season after leading the Loggers to a third straight conference championship and a fourth straight Dick Niclai title.

Arcata senior Nora Talty, who led the Tigers to just their second-ever NorCal championship game, also is included, as is Hoopa senior Tashee Tracy, who also enjoyed an outstanding season playing for the Warriors and was one of the most dominating post players in the H-DNL.

Rounding out the list of seven H-DNL girls to be nominated is Del Norte senior Lily Nunez, despite opting not to play this winter.

Among the four H-DNL boys to be nominated is St. Bernard’s senior Aaiden Burris, who was recently named co-MVP of the Little 4, as well as South Fork senior Tommy Rotbergs.

Both Burris and Rotbergs enjoyed outstanding seasons for their respective teams and each surpassed the 1,000 point career mark this winter.

A pair of Arcata Tigers also were nominated.

Sophomore standout Luke Lemke, who was named Big 5 MVP this year, was included, along with junior Luke Moxon, who was named co-MVP of the Big 5 last season.

Moxon is among the nominees despite seeing just limited action this season because of injury.
