By Ray Hamill — St. Bernard’s fans obviously will be rooting for the Crusaders in Saturday’s Division-4 girls basketball state championship final, but they’re not the only ones.
One of the great things about H-DNL sports is that many coaches and student-athletes put aside their rivalries when it comes to the playoffs.
If you’ve ever attended a playoff contest here on the North Coast, you’ll often see players from other teams in the stands supporting their rivals in action.
It’s something that you don’t often see elsewhere.
And on Friday, the Fortuna girls basketball teams showcased their support for the Crusaders.
The St. Bernard’s players and coaches left Eureka to travel to Sacramento for Saturday’s big game, receiving a police escort out of town.
And when they got to Fortuna, several of the Huskies players from the varsity, JV and freshmen girls basketball teams were on hand to wish the convoy the best of luck as they get set to represent the H-DNL on the biggest stage of all.
The players walked down to the 12th street overpass and cheered on the Crusaders with signs of support.
It was a cool show of support from a classy program.
The SB girls will play Grossmont out of San Diego County in Saturday’s game, which gets under way at 10 a.m.

nothing like teenie boppers hanging over an overpass guardrail that is too low…
…good thing nobody acidentally jumped off in juberance…
…I like the spirit, but question the lack of common sense…
…the CHP typically comes down hard on others who do similar sign waving from freeway overpasses…
… sometimes excitement goes a wee bit too far when public infrastructure is used for private purposes…
but I like the spirit and support, just not from a freeway overpass…
Love this support, and what a great story for SB girls. First time ever for any BB program from the HDNL to win a State Championship!!!!
Well done Crusaders.
Thanks to all the fans and supporters, and what a classy show from Fortuna!
