VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS — Freshman standout leads fourth-quarter rally

By Ray Hamill — In the immortal words of the insightful and brilliant Yogi Berra, it was a case of deja vu all over again on Wednesday.

In more ways than one.

The St. Bernard’s girls secured their third NorCal regional championship in 10 years with a 60-54 win over Arcata in front of a packed house at College of the Redwoods.

They also rallied from a large deficit for the second straight matchup against the Tigers, having done so in the Dick Niclai tournament semifinal, also played at CR, in early February.

And those weren’t the only examples of “deja vu all over again.”

For the second time in just three days, freshman sensation Samantha Sundberg played a pivotal role for her team in the fourth quarter, just as she had done in the NorCal semifinal against Foothill on Monday night.

Sundberg, who looks set to be a force in local basketball for the next three years, scored nine of her 11 points in the final period as she helped kickstart the late rally and bring a loud and enthusiastic SB student section back into the game.

Sundberg hit a key 3-pointer two minutes into the fourth to pull her team within four, and her head coach Matt Tomlin felt that was the moment the St. Bernard’s girls began to feel they would win the game.

“I thought when Samantha hit that big 3, everybody thought we can do this,” Tomlin said.

Sundberg wasn’t finished yet.

She would score six more points in the final 1:46 of the game, which was her team’s final six points of the night, including a pair of baskets on assists from teammate Laila Florvilus, and two clutch free throws to ice the win in the final 30 seconds.

All in all it was an impressive performance by the young player, who Tomlin says is playing well beyond her years.

Check out the game highlights above and what was a fantastic atmosphere at CR on a night anyone who was there will remember for a long time.
