The College of the Redwoods baseball team continued to roll on Friday, as the Corsairs opened conference play with a 5-1 victory at Shasta.

On Thursday night, meanwhile, the Cal Poly Humboldt basketball teams both lost at home against Cal State Los Angeles.

The men fell 81-80, while the women lost 74-68.

Despite the loss, the Humboldt women remain in the chase for one of the final two California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament berths, although they will have to win their final two games to make it.

At Shasta, the Corsairs maintained their perfect start to the baseball season and improved to 8-0 overall with a conference-opening victory over the Knights.

Former McKinleyville Panther Riley Bates got the win on the mound.

The freshman pitcher threw six innings, allowing just one earned run on eight hits and four walks and striking out three.

Blake Browning provided the offensive highlight of the day with a home run, while Gavyn Dansby and Dante Strazzullo each had a pair of hits.

Cam Witte and Seth Grammer each also had a double.

The Corsairs and Knights will conclude a three-game weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.

Shasta dropped to 1-13 with Friday’s loss.

At Cal Poly Humboldt, meanwhile, former Arcata Tiger Brandon Bento-Jackson had a career night on Thursday, scoring a season-high 20 points in basketball action.

The freshman guard also had five assists.

The loss ended a two-game winning streak for the Lumberjacks, who dropped to 3-17 in conference and 6-19 overall.

Nicole Flennaugh led the Humboldt women with 18 points, as they dropped to 11-13 overall and 9-11 in conference.

With two games remaining, the Jacks are tied for eighth in the conference standings, but remain just one win out of sixth place and the final CCAA tournament spot.

Both Humboldt teams will host Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday night, with the women tipping off at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:30.

The Jacks close out the season on Thursday night, when Chico State visits Lumberjack Arena.
