BOYS BASKETBALL — Tournament play continues for H-DNL schools

Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – The Eureka Loggers lost to Fortuna in overtime at the Arcata tournament on Friday.

St. Bernard’s improved to 5-0 on the season with a second win in two days at the Mt. Shasta tournament on another busy night of tournament games for the H-DNL.

The Crusaders beat the tournament hosts 58-49 and will play Weed in the championship game on Saturday evening at 5 p.m.

Also in tournament play on Friday, Fortuna edged Eureka 88-84 in overtime, at the 55th annual Jerry Paul Arcata Invitational Basketball Tournament, while McKinleyville beat Red Bluff 67-51.

In other games on Friday, the Hoopa Warriors got their first win of the season, defeating Fort Bragg 39-37, while the Arcata Tigers beat Enterprise 55-45 to advance to their own tournament championship game.

Arcata will play Montgomery on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

At Mt. Shasta, senior Seth Dyer had another big game for the Crusaders and finished with 17 points and six rebounds while also playing well defensively.

According to head coach Issac Gildea, Dyer has matured into a complete player this season.

“He’s so well rounded defensively and offensively,” the coach said. “We can rely on him to guard (the other team’s) best player and rely on him to get shots inside and outside.”

Fellow senior Aaiden Burris also had 17 points in the win to go with a team-best four assists, and he also is showing a maturity to his game this season.

“Aaiden Burris is explosive and he had a great game tonight,” Gildea said. “Aaiden is really being a team player, which makes us so much more dangerous.”

Sophomore Liam Dyer added 10 points and nine rebounds in the win — a remarkable tally on the boards for a point guard — while freshman Garrett Shanahan continues to be a force on the boards and finished with 16 rebounds.

“We played great defensively and Garrett was a monster on the boards,” said Gildea, who added of Liam Dyer, “he’s a special player as well.”

But once again the coach stressed it was the team ball that impressed him the most.

“We’re connected on and off the court,” he said.

The Panthers, meanwhile, bounced back from a narrow loss to Enterprise on Thursday with a 16-point win over Red Bluff and improved to 6-3.

Bode Douglass set the early tone for McKinleyville and scored 12 of his team’s first 14 points in the game.

The sophomore standout has impressed early in the season and would finish with a team-high 23 points in the win.

Teammate Flynn Creighton added 12 points, while Cole Armstrong finished with 11 points and influential senior Jordan Brown chipped in nine points.

Lyle McKinnon scored a team-high 12 points for Hoopa, which improved to 1-5 on the season, while teammate Malaki McCoy added 11 points and Carlos Anzora finished with seven points.

  1. Not sure if Red Bluff loses basketball athletes to winter soccer in CIF-NS. Chico and PV and Redding teams have larger student population draws.
