The Corsairs will carry some momentum into this week’s Coach Treggs Classic after recording a third straight win in men’s basketball on Monday night.

Hosting Simpson University JV in their home opener, the College of the Redwoods men won 87-76.

The sharpshooting Corsairs hit 10 3-pointers in the win as they improved to 4-5.

“Credit to Simpson, they played well and competed like true sportsmen,” CR head coach Ryan Bisio said. “We know as well as anybody how difficult it is to get out of the vans after that drive and play well, and they managed to do it very admirably.”

The Corsairs had five different players finish with double digits in scoring, led by Trey Neff with 19 points.

Kai Purcell and Jett Cheong each added 15 points, while Mason Mottashed chipped in 14 points and Ty Neff 10.

Trey Neff and Purcell combined for seven of their team’s 3s, which “ultimately gave us the firepower we needed to see the game through,” according to Bisio.

The head coach also was impressed with Mottashed’s performance.

“Mason Mottashed played with a flare and confidence tonight that glued a few of our best lineups together,” he said. “I appreciate the way he felt aggressive out there to score.”

The Corsairs will host the three-day Coach Treggs Classic from Thursday to Saturday, and Bisio is hoping his players will continue to find ways to win.

“We had a team discussion after the game about continuing to scratch and claw to find our identity,” he said. “We have a great opportunity at the Treggs Classic this week to play some spirited ball and keep the search alive.”

The CR men open tournament play against Southwestern Oregon on Thursday at 7 p.m.
