GIRLS BASKETBALL — Huskies win again; Loggers fall to Division-1 Dons

The Fortuna girls improved to 2-0 on the season with a nice win at home to Ukiah on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies, who also beat Fort Bragg in their season opener a week ago, defeated the Wildcats 46-27 in a non-tournament game.

Also in action on Saturday, the Eureka girls fell 81-29 to Division-I Acalanes at the Pinole Valley Shootout.

At Fortuna, junior Kalie Chittenden scored a team-high 23 points for the Huskies, while sophomore teammate Tatiana Olson finished with eight points.

It was the team defense, however, that helped set the tone and caused the visitors problems, with Jorlynn Villalvazo and Emily Sauers leading the way.

“The team played great defense the entire game,” head coach Tom Chapman said. “(Villalvazo and Sauers) did an awesome job protecting the paint and securing rebounds.”

The Huskies held Ukiah, a Division-2 team, to just six first-half points and they took care of the ball.

“The girls did a nice job of limiting turnovers and taking advantage of fast-break opportunities,” Chapman said.

Last week, the Huskies beat Fort Bragg 55-39.

Allie Cox led the way with 19 points and nine steals in that win, while fellow senior Sabrina Aguilar-Arce added 13 points and Chittenden chipped in 10 points.

Next up, the Huskies will play Woodland Christian when they open the Colusa tournament on Thursday.

The Eureka girls, meanwhile, fell to 2-1 on the season after losing to the D-1 Dons.

“We were unable to keep up with their speed,” said head coach Cliff Napoleon, whose team dropped to 2-1.

Isis Poteet led the Eureka offense with nine points, while teammate Jeralyn Miller added seven points.

On Friday night the Eureka girls defeated Miramonte 49-32 with a strong defensive performance.

Next up, the Loggers will play at the Gridley tournament next weekend.

  1. Gridley is off HWY 99 north of Live Oak, south of Biggs which is south of the 99/70 connecter south of Chico…

  2. EHS ladies versus D1 Dons… what a humbling opportunity to gel as a team, look in the mirror, admit there is much hard practice to put in to elevate their game to a better level… 50+ point loss is a “reckoning”.
