The Humboldt Eagles 19Us dropped their opening game at the Medford tournament on Thursday night, falling 5-4 to Salem in extra innings.
Del Norte’s Ethan Thomas was outstanding on the mound in the loss, while Rogan Bode and Willie Bommelyn both had big games at the plate.
Thomas, who got a no-decision, threw five innings and allowed just two runs while striking out four.
Matt Letter took the loss on the mound in relief.
At the plate, Eureka’s Bode finished 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, while Bommelyn had a big two-out, two-RBI hit to give his team a 4-2 lead.
However, mistakes on the bases and pitchers getting behind in the count proved costly for the Eagles, who dropped a second straight game for the first time this season.
Humboldt’s Daniel Osborne and Cody Collins both finished 1-for-3 with a double.
With the loss, the Eagles dropped to 11-5-1 on the season.
They will continue tournament play and try to get back to winning ways when they play the Medford Mustangs at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
The weekend tournament runs for four days and is part of a 12-game road trip for the local American Legion baseball team.
