The top seeds in the North Coast Section Division-4 softball bracket proved too hot for the Fortuna Huskies on Tuesday evening.
Just four days after a thrilling walk-off win over Hoopa, the Fortuna girls bowed out of the playoffs with a 7-0 loss to the Cardinals.
Newman pitcher Callie Howard threw a two-hitter for the win in the circle and finished with 10 strikeouts while walking just two batters.
Fortuna seniors Libby Johnston and Kylee Fennell each had a base hit, but the Huskies were unable to take advantage of their opportunities when they had runners on.
For the Cardinals, Jordyn Johnson had a double and a triple and Callie Howard added a double and a single and three RBIs.
Gianna Tamayo also was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
The Huskies concluded their season with a 12-10 record.
There are now six H-DNL teams remaining alive in the NCS playoffs in baseball and softball, four of whom will be in action on Wednesday.
In Division-4 baseball, the No, 3 seeded Arcata Tigers will host No. 7 Del Norte at Arcata High School at 5 p.m.
In Division-4 softball, the No. 2 Del Norte girls will host No. 3 Salesian in Crescent City, also at 5 p.m., with the winner advancing to play Cardinal Newman in the weekend championship game.
In Division-3 softball, No. 6 Eureka will host No. 10 Encinal at Washington Elementary at 5 p.m.
On Saturday, in the Division-6 baseball championship game, No. 1 St. Bernard’s will host No. 2 Ferndale at Crusader Field at 1 p.m.
