By Ray Hamill — The Eureka Loggers will get a rematch with the Hoopa Warriors after successfully navigating their opening game at the Charlie Lakin tournament on Wednesday.
Playing at the Arcata Sports Complex, the Loggers defeated the Ferndale Wildcats 16-0 to advance to the tournament semifinals.
Earlier in the day, the McKinleyville Panthers defeated the St. Bernard’s Crusaders 6-0 in the tournament opener.
The Panthers will now play Big 5 champion Del Norte on Thursday at 5 p.m., with the Loggers and Hoopa Warriors facing off at 7, just two weeks after the Hoopa girls got the better of Eureka 8-1 in non-league action.
Nine different McKinleyville players hit successfully in Wednesday’s win, including freshmen McKennah Sargent and Liana Stumpf, who each had two hits.
Camryn Pinard added a triple in the win, while Bailee Box was 1-for-3 with three RBIs, Kennedy Minton was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Taya Gomes was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Trinity Preston, Mashell Stumpf and Rebecca Barnett each also had a hit in the win.
Mashell Stumpf got the win in the circle, allowing just one hit and one walk in three innings work and striking out five.
“McKinleyville played well. They are a solid team,” St. Bernard’s coach Brian Finck said. “We wish them well in their remaining games.”
Sargent also threw four strong innings in the win, allowing just two hits and striking out two.
Hannah Finck, Ella Jimenez and Aubree Saunderson each had a hit for St. Bernard’s.
Jimenez got the start in the circle and threw three solid innings before Torrin Baty took over in relief and close out the game.
“I thought SB had improved a ton since we last saw them and they played very good defense,” McKinleyville head coach Shanna McCracken said.
