ATHLETES AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — Hard work pays off for national champs

Submitted photo – Eureka’s Connor Brogan and KyleeAnna Zink-Clinton celebrate their national championships in Florida last weekend.

By Ray Hamill — When you win a national championship, you deserve to be named a Humboldt Sports Athlete of the Week.

And that’s the case this week for a pair of former Eureka Loggers, who were crowned national champions in competitive collegiate cheerleading.

Teammates Connor Brogan and KyleeAnna Zink-Clinton are both competing for Lindenwood University in Missouri.

Last weekend, they traveled to Daytona, Florida, for the NCA/NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Team Championships, and both former Loggers left as national champions.

Brogan was part of the Lindenwood Advanced Large Coed team, while Zink-Clinton competed on the university’s Intermediate Small Coed squad, with both teams beating out the best teams in the nation.

Joining them as one of our Athletes of the Week is St. Bernard’s Carl Nunes, who is enjoying a breakout season competing in track and field.

The speedy SB senior recently competed in the triple jump for the first time last week and remarkably set the top mark in the North Coast Section with a jump of 43’ 4”.

Our team of the week, meanwhile, goes to the Arcata High Baseball Team.

The high-flying Tigers have been red-hot at the plate, and that, coupled with some strong pitching and defense, has led to an eight-game winning streak.

The Tigers, who return to league play next week, won all three of their games at the Shasta Tournament this past week and are now 13-2 on the season.

Our Athletes and Team of the Week awards are sponsored by College of the Redwoods Athletics.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Connor Brogan

KyleeAnna Zink-Clinton

Lindenwood University

Brogan and Zink-Clinton both competed in cheerleading in all four years at Eureka High School before taking their talents to the collegiate level.

Brogan joined the Lindenwood Lions after graduating from Eureka High in 2019, and Zink-Clinton would join her high school teammate in Missouri after graduating in 2021.

And the decision to compete together with the Lions has paid off for both.

Nunes has taken the H-DN and NCS by storm this spring with some outstanding performances.

In addition to setting the top mark in the NCS in the triple jump, which was only surpassed this week, Nunes also has has the fourth-best mark in the section in the long jump (21’ 10”).

TEAM OF THE WEEK

Arcata Baseball

The Tigers are the hottest team in the H-DN right now after stretching their winning streak to eight straight games at the three-day Shasta tournament this week.

The Tigers have been particularly impressive at the plate, with several players in a deep lineup all contributing.

They have put up double digits in runs in six of their eight straight wins, while outscoring their opponents by a combined 91-17 during that run.

Head coach Troy Ghisetti has his team playing as well as anyone could have hoped for and the Tigers are well in contention to defend the league championship they shared with Eureka last spring.
