College rowing returns to the Humboldt Bay this weekend, with Cal Poly Humboldt hosting its annual Blue Heron Regatta on Saturday.

This will be the Lumberjacks’ only home regatta of the season.

In addition to the Jacks, Division-I Saint Mary’s will compete, along with club teams from Chico State and Sonoma State.

The action gets under way at 8 a.m. with the women’s V8 race and will continue throughout the morning before culminating with an alumni race at 11:30 a.m.

The Jacks will look to continue their positive results after a successful trip to the Husky Open in Seattle last week, where they beat GNAC preseason favorites Western Washington and Seattle Pacific.

“I always look for progressions,” head coach Matt Weise said. “I think they executed great. Both the varsity 8 and varsity 4 really laid it down on the race course and did an excellent job, as did our other two boats.

“I think the team has decided that rather than sitting back and hoping that they’re fast enough, I think this has invigorated them to find out how fast they can actually go. I think they used this weekend as a good motivator for performing later on.”
