Change announced for key Big 5 league-opening series

The Arcata Tigers will finally get the opportunity to play a first official game at their new baseball field next Saturday after a switch in venues was announced for next week’s league-opening series against the Eureka Loggers.

The two defending co-champs of the Big 5 were scheduled to face off in a single game at Arcata on Wednesday and a doubleheader at Bomber Field in Eureka next Saturday, but the order has been switched because College of the Redwoods will be playing at the Redwood Acres venue next Saturday.

So that means the Loggers and Tigers will play one game at Bomber Field on Wednesday and follow that with a field-opening doubleheader three days later.

The Arcata players and coaches were busy working on the new facility on Saturday and believe it’s ready to go.

“We call it field beautification,” Ghisetti said. “It looks good. The kids have really contributed a ton of work on that field and it looks good.”

The Tigers installed a new scoreboard on Friday.

Arcata will begin league play 4-1, while Eureka is 4-0.

The three-game league-opening series will be a key one with the winner taking an early advantage in what should be an intriguing Big 5 this spring.
