By Ray Hamill — A limited H-DN JV baseball season closed out this weekend with a five-team tournament at McKinleyville and St. Bernard’s.
The annual end-of-season tourney is usually hosted by the Arcata Tigers, but their new baseball field wasn’t quite ready for the occasion and some other schools stepped in to help save the day.
“I have to compliment (McKinleyville head coach) Mike Dobrec for getting that field ready to play, and (St. Bernard’s head coach) Matt Tomlin for stepping in to help,” Arcata head coach Troy Ghisetti said. “It was a group effort. All the coaches came together to get some games for these kids.”
It’s been a tough campaign for the younger players with the weather playing havoc on their short season.
The weekend tournament, however, at least gave them some opportunities and will help prepare them for the move up to varsity.
Many of the H-DN JVs will now join their school’s varsity squads for the remainder of the spring.
Arcata, McKinleyville, Fortuna, St. Bernard’s and Eureka all had teams competing.
