The College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team fell 58-49 at College of the Sequoias on Saturday night to end one of the most memorable seasons ever for the local community college team.
The Corsairs, who were seeded No. 6 in the NorCal bracket, battled the No. 3 seeded Giants in Visalia and gave them all they could handle for much of the night.
But the home team pulled away late for the win, denying the Corsairs a trip to the state tournament.
CR’s all-state selection Trey Neff scored a game-high 24 points in the loss, as the Corsairs ended the season with just their fourth loss of the campaign and closed out 26-4
Redwoods led by a point at halftime, but was outscored by 10 points in the second period.
Neff, who is coming off an outstanding freshman campaign with the team, added 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Only one other CR player scored in double digits, with sophomore center Jon Nchekwube scoring 10 points in his final game for the team.
Nchekwube, who set a career record for most ever rebounds at CR, also had a double double and added an impressive 25 boards in the loss.
Arcata’s Kai Purcell capped an outstanding debut season with the team with seven points, while teammate Jett Cheong added five assists and four points.
Sequoias also beat the Corsairs in last year’s playoffs, although this showdown was much closer than last year’s 88-64 matchup.
The 26 wins were the most ever in a single season for the Corsairs.
