By Ray Hamill — After traveling for games for the opening month of the season, the College of the Redwoods softball team will play its home openers on Wednesday.
The Corsairs will play a doubleheader against Yuba College at the Bear River Recreational Center, with games at 10 a.m. and noon.
The CR women are 6-6 on the season after sweeping a doubleheader at Mendocino College in Ukiah last week.
The 49ers have not been as busy and come into Wednesday’s games at 0-2, having had four of their opening six games postponed.
The doubleheader marks the beginning of an eight-game home stand for the Corsairs, including a conference opening doubleheader against Siskiyous in two weeks.
The team’s sophomores have been setting the pace through the opening 12 games, including shortstop Sadie Hampton, who is batting .500 with six doubles and three triples, all of them team highs.
Hampton also has a team-best six stolen bases.
Third baseman Brooke Faraimo also has impressed at the plate and is averaging .400, while Kyla Pontoni is batting .395 and Ashley Ballew .375
Hampton, Faraimo and Pontoni each have a team-high 12 RBIs, while Pontoni leads the way with two home runs.
In the circle, sophomore Kylee Dewey has split time with freshman Allie Egbert, a McKinleyville graduate, and each pitcher now has three wins.
