ATHLETES AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — Schaad, Poteet, CR men enjoy big weeks

By Ray Hamill — Consistency has been paying off for two local high school athletes this winter, as both enjoyed stellar weeks on their respective teams.

And that makes them our Athletes of the Week, sponsored by College of the Redwoods Athletics.

At Eureka High, junior Isis Poteet has played a key role on the Loggers girls basketball team all season and she turned in a player-of-the-game performance in the North Coast Section playoffs on Friday night.

Poteet came of the bench to spark the Eureka girls once again and had an outstanding all-around game in a 69-58 win over St. Patrick-St. Vincent.

Poteet and her teammates will now turn their attention to top seed Marin Catholic for a semifinal showdown on Tuesday.

Del Norte’s Adenne Schaad has been equally impressive on the wrestling mats this winter and capped a stellar high school career with a milestone achievement at last weekend’s H-DNL championships.

The Del Norte senior was crowned a league champion for a fourth consecutive year at Fortuna, and that earns her the nod as one of our Athletes of the Week.

Our Team of the Week, meanwhile, goes to the CR men’s basketball.

The history-making Corsairs closed out another impressive regular season with an 86-81 win over Feather River, capping a third straight Golden Valley Conference title for the first time ever.

Poteet has played a pivotal role on a Loggers team that clinched a second straight Big 5 and Dick Niclai Tournament double this season.

The standout junior enjoyed another outstanding week, with big performances in a pair of playoff wins over Elsie Allen and St. Patrick-St. Vincent.

And she’s not done yet.

Del Norte Wrestling, Senior

It doesn’t get any better than four league titles in four years.

And that’s exactly what Schaad achieved last week as she closed out a standout H-DN career on the mats with another individual league championship at Fortuna.

The senior was one of three Del Norte girls to win a league title, and one of four Warriors to advance to this weekend’s North Coast Section championships.

College of the Redwoods Men’s Basketball

This year’s Corsairs are in a class of their own.

Under the guidance of head coach Ryan Bisio, the CR men not only clinched a first-ever three-peat of Golden Valley Conference championships for the program, but also set a new school record with 25 wins in a single season.

And they’re not done yet either.

The CR men will now turn their attention to the playoffs, where they look set to make some noise.
