BOYS POWER RANKINGS — Another new No. 1 team this week

By Ray Hamill — What a difference a week makes.

After three big performances in five days, including lopsided victories over both McKinleyville and Eureka, the Arcata Tigers have jumped to the top of our Power Rankings with the subtlety of a Luke Moxon slam dunk.

They are the third different No. 1 in three weeks, showcasing just what a rollercoaster of a season it has been locally, and they are now the frontrunners in the race for the Big 5 title.

Judging by the way things have been going, that will probably change again next week, but for now the Arcata boys are a deserved No. 1.

The McKinleyville Panthers, meanwhile, drop one spot to No. 2 after their big loss to the Tigers, but they remain in the hunt for the league title and will be looking forward to the return matchup against the Tigers at Mack on Jan. 26.

Expect the Panthers to bounce back this week and respond emphatically in their next game.

The Huskies also drop one spot this week to No. 3, but they have responded well after losing their opening two league games, putting up back-to-back wins on Wednesday and Friday.

No. 4 St. Bernard’s is the lone Little 4 representative in our top five this week after opening league play with back-to-back wins, while the Del Norte Warriors drop one spot to No. 5 after a loss at Fortuna on Friday night.

South Fork and Eureka remain on the bubble.
