ATHLETES AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — Crusaders sweep weekly awards

Submitted photo – The St. Bernard’s players and coaches celebrate their tournament win on Saturday.

By Ray Hamill — It’s safe to say it was a good opening weekend for St. Bernard’s basketball.

Both the girls and boys teams won their season-opening tournaments, while two of their team leaders were named tournament MVPs.

And that earns the Crusaders a sweep of our weekly awards, sponsored by College of the Redwoods Athletics.

With head coach Matt Tomlin back calling the shots after a year away from the team, the SB girls turned in a dominating performance at the weekend Cloverdale tournament.

And that gets them the nod for our team of the week.

And the awards don’t end there for the team, which also features one of our athletes of the week.

Junior Madelyn Shanahan led a balanced team performance and scored in double digits in all three games on her way to being named tournament MVP.

The multi-sport standout appears to have transitioned seamlessly from the volleyball court and soccer field after playing a huge role for both SB teams in the fall.

Joining her as our boys athlete of the week is St. Bernard’s junior Aaiden Burris, who led the way for the school’s boys team at the Upper Lake tournament.

Burris averaged more than 20 points a game in three comfortable wins for the Crusaders and was named tourney MVP.

St. Bernard’s Basketball, Junior

Burris played a big role on last year’s NorCal championship team and looks ready to step up his game even more this winter.

The St. Bernard’s junior scored 61 points over three games to lead the way offensively, as the Crusaders cruised to a tournament championship.

No doubt, bigger challenges await Burris and St. Bernard’s down the line, but so far so good.

Madelyn Shanahan

St. Bernard’s Basketball, Junior

A two time-league MVP in the fall in both soccer and volleyball, Shanahan got the new basketball season off to a flying start over the weekend.

The junior standout scored 26 points against Windsor in the championship game on Saturday morning.

Not a bad start for her and her teammates, which leads us on to our team of the week.

St. Bernard’s Girls Basketball

The SB girls knocked off three decent opponents in comfortable fashion on their way to the Cloverdale tournament championship.

They opened with a 59-39 win over the host school, and followed that with a 34-point win over St. Helena and a 16-point win over Windsor in the decider.

In addition to Shanahan being named MVP, Laila Florvilus also was instrumental and was named all-tournament.

Jocelyn Sundberg, Aliyah Vigil, Aimayah Her, Rihanna Fontenot and Mataya Sherman, among others, each also played a key role.
