Corsairs step up in early-season statement win

College of the Redwoods Athletics – Jett Cheong lines up a late free throw against Santa Rosa with his teammates in the background.

The fact that a program of Santa Rosa’s stature is willing to come up to play College of the Redwoods in men’s basketball tells us plenty about how far the Corsairs have come in recent years. The fact that the Corsairs beat them tells us even more.

On Wednesday night, the CR men continued their fast start to the new season with a 66-60 victory over the Bear Cubs in their home opener.

The win, which came against the No. 5 team in NorCal, lifts the Corsairs to 4-0 and suggests that this new-look team should be every bit as competitive as last season.

It was also a good early-season test.

“Santa Rosa gave us remarkable resistance defensively,” CR head coach Ryan Bisio said. “Our ability to find solutions and improvise was mature beyond our years.”

Freshman Trey Neff continued his impressive start to the season and scored a team-high 22 points, while returning all-state center Jon Nchekwube took over in the second half and finished with 19 points.

Jett Cheong also has impressed early in the new season and chipped in 14 points.

“Jett steadied us all night,” Bisio said.

The unbeaten Corsairs will hit the road for games against Mendocino on Friday night at 6 p.m. and Solano on Saturday at 2 p.m.
