ATHLETES AND TEAMS OF THE WEEK — History makers take center stage

Submitted photo – The St. Bernard’s girls celebrate their NCS win over the weekend.

By Ray Hamill — We have co-Teams of the Week once again this week, with a pair of history makers sharing the spoils.

The St. Bernard’s girls soccer team clinched a North Coast Section championship over the weekend, and that’s usually enough to get you a Team-of-the-Week nod, especially when you become the first-ever H-DNL soccer team to win three straight section championships.

The SB girls won 3-1 at Upper Lake in the decider to cap a memorable season that also included a Little 4 championship.

The Del Norte girls soccer team also made some history last week.

The Warriors not only qualified for the North Coast Section playoffs for the first time ever, but they also got the program’s first-ever playoff win, 1-0 at Fort Bragg.

With a roster that features mostly freshmen, the Warriors should only get stronger in the coming years.

Our Athlete of the Week, meanwhile, goes to a Eureka senior who also enjoyed a milestone achievement this week.

Daniel Shaver quite literally saved his best for last and was crowned H-DNL champion in cross country with his first-ever high school victory in his final league race.

Competing at the Arcata Marsh, Shaver followed three straight second-place finishes with a victory in the biggest local race of the season.

Daniel Shaver

Eureka Cross Country, Senior

Shaver set a PR in the championship race, completing the 5K course in a time of 16 minutes 56 seconds.

And that wasn’t all for the Loggers senior, who also helped Eureka to a team championship.

TEAMS OF THE WEEK

St. Bernard’s Girls Soccer

The Crusaders are NCS champs again, claiming a third consecutive championship with another gutsy performance on the road.

All three of their recent section championships have come on the road against higher seeds, and one player — senior Adrianna Granados — was on all three championship teams.

Del Norte Girls Soccer

It was a season head coach Cyndi Hansen and her players won’t easily forget.

The Warriors not only got their first-ever playoff win, but this season they also built a solid foundation for the future of the program.

With a sizable roster of young players, including outstanding goalkeeper Deja Payne, the Del Norte girls should only get better.
