The race for the boys H-DNL championship will go down to the final night of action, although the Arcata Tigers won their game in hand on Tuesday night to claim at least a co-championship.

The Tigers won at South Fork 6-1.

The victory lifts them to 9-0-2 in league play, while the Eureka Loggers are 7-0-4 and can still be crowned co-champs of they win their final game at Del Norte on Thursday and the Tigers lose their final game at home to McKinleyville on the same day.

Arcata senior Ethan Gyenis was instrumental in Tuesday’s win, scoring two goals and assisting on two more.

Kaden O’Brien also scored twice and added an assist, while Kayin Kloberdanz had a goal and an assist.

Julian Gillespie rounded out the scoring, while Tex Larsen and Miles Kraemer each also had an assist.

In other H-DNL games on Tuesday, Del Norte tied the Panthers 1-1 at McKinleyville High.

Adrian Contreras scored in the opening half for the visitors, but the home team tied things up late when senior Angel Gonzalez scored from 30 yards out to salvage a share of the points.

Gonzalez was one of three Mack seniors who were honored before the game, along with Daniel Jones and Gino Gonzalez and all three led the second-half charge.

“After a slow start to the senior day game we showed a spirited effort in the second half,” McKinleyville head coach Ryne Deppe said.

Del Norte is now 6-4-1, and both teams will close out the regular season on Thursday.

  1. Arcata has been more consistent than rest of division…

Del Norte has impressed with their w-l record…

Arcata’s opponents still are not playing an effective formation to limit or stop Ethan Gyenis… EG has a Justin Mora type game, physique… must tighten-up the back line and get the midfielders, wingers and full-backs involved defensively… with a player like EG, the opponent could play a split/offset double pivot with 2 defensive mids (3-5-2/3-2-3-2 or 4-2-3-1), or play a formation with a single pivot/stopper, while being supported by a diamond midfield formation…say a 3-1-4-2 diamond or a 4-1-4-1 diamond for center zone defense strength… stopper must be disciplined around the penalty area, have slide tackle technique, typically physical and menacing to not allow an offensive threat (striker, central zone attackers) to turn toward goal easily or allow open looks, uncontested passes/shots…

    • A stronger defensive strategy is the 4-3-2-1, but it can be challenging if the team is not adept to short area quick passing or center zone attacking offense… the key is scheming wide play on offense, and staying compact on defense…

If 4-3-2 is still not good enough defensively, a quick reform to a 4-5 transitions easily…

If 3-2-1 is not working good enough on offense, form a 2-3-1 with a switching defensive mid (DM) who can integrate better passing and set-ups playing deeper in the attack zone (forward 3rd)…

So, 4-3-2-1 central balance back 2/3… to a 4-5-1 on defense IF NECESSARY or 4-2-3-1 on offense IF NECESSARY…

Soccer Coach legend Laszlo Lesku’s surviving wife just passed away… Fortuna lost 2 great, good people that are irreplaceable…

Often to this day, think of Lesku… that guy could befriend anyone, a class-act all the way…Deanna was no different, and likely why their marriage was long-lasting…

…also, Coach Marv W. and Dale S. from EHS days… class acts all-around… made Henchy a better person… father figures…

  3. Sad to see such talent on southfork go to waste. I see such bright stars on their team that keep them alive in the league but their communication and passing is one, if not the worst in the league. They relie on through passes that are highly flawed and mostly score off corners and balls in the box. I still just can’t believe how they were able to tie eureka while only giving up 2 goals
