ATHLETES AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — Seniors stepping up their game

By Ray Hamill — One local senior student reminded his team of what they’ve been missing in the early season this past week, while another enjoyed a milestone career moment.

And that makes each of them our Athletes of the Week, an award sponsored by College of the Redwoods Athletics.

In football, Grant Omey recently returned from an injury that kept him out of the first few weeks of the season, and he enjoyed a huge game against Arcata on Saturday night.

The team captain had a big impact at both running back and linebacker, as the Crusaders rolled to a comfortable 34-6 win.

The Tigers had no answer for Omey, who scored three first-half touchdowns and made numerous big plays.

Down at Fortuna, meanwhile, senior Ella Owsley enjoyed a big week in cross country.

The Huskies standout posted her first-ever career victory in an -DNL race, edging the field at Eureka on Wednesday afternoon.

The fast-paced Owsley finished the 5K course in a time of 20 minutes 50 seconds, outpacing the field by 10 seconds.

Our Team of the Week honors, meanwhile, go to the Arcata Girls Golf Team, which has dominated the first month of the H-DNL season and more.

The league-leading Tigers took a break from league action this week to compete at the Helen Linfield Memorial High School Tournament in Red Bluff and came away with an impressive victory.

The Arcata girls out-paced a field that included some of the best teams in the Northern Section by 35 strokes.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Grant Omey

St. Bernard’s Football, Senior

Omey scored three first-half touchdowns against the Tigers, as St. Bernard’s opened up a 34-0 lead before the break.

The senior back found the end zone on a 49-yard reception on the Crusaders’ opening possession and would add two TD runs.

“He’s just electric as a football player,” Crusaders head coach Matt Tomlin said of his senior co-captain. “And he leads our team through through his actions, the way he practices, the way he plays. I’m very proud of him. He was definitely the MVP of our game.”

His return to fitness definitely gives the Crusaders an added dimension.

Ella Owsley

Fortuna Cross Country, Senior

Perseverance is paying off for Owsley, who got her first H-DNL victory at Eureka on Wednesday afternoon.

The Fortuna senior placed third in the league opening race at McKinleyville last week, but jumped two spots to first this week and appears well positioned to battle for the league title this fall.

Owsley also placed second at the Brookings Invite earlier this month.

TEAM OF THE WEEK

Arcata Girls Golf

Through the opening few weeks of the season, the Tigers have shown they are clearly the best and deepest team in the H-DNL.

This week they showed us they can beat some of the best teams from out of the area as well.

On Monday, the Arcata girls comfortably beat several Northern Section teams at the nine-team Red Bluff tournament.

Avery Meadows led the way with a round of 92, with teammates Sagen Sarchett, Iris Coonrod, Amaya Urquidez, Morgan Ford and Madyson Nelson rounding out a big team performance.
