Fresh off her record-breaking spring competing in track and field, Hannah Hartwell had a cross country debut to remember for College of the Redwoods on Saturday.
The Corsairs sophomore placed first at the NorCal Preview meet at Rohner Park in Fortuna, comfortably outpacing the field by more than a minute.
Hartwell finished the hilly 5K course in a time of 19 minutes, 51 seconds, well ahead of second-placed Sofia Camacho of Hartnell (20:54).
And most of the runners and teams seemed to enjoy the occasion.
“Outside of the big hill, I really think everybody enjoyed running in the woods,” CR head coach Reed Elmore said. “It wowed everyone. Humboldt County put its best foot forward today.”
Hartwell’s big performance helped the CR women to the team victory as well, with Sierra in second and Hartnell in third.
Maggie Stacy (22:43) and Kristin Bommini (22:52) placed 12th and 13th for CR.
“Maggie and Kirstin have really trained hard and it showed today,” Elmore said.
CR’s Chloe Allen and Deborah Wells placed 30th and 32nd.
The CR men didn’t fare quite so well, placing 10th as a team.
Sean Dugdale led the way for the team in 50th, with teammate Thomas Becannon six spots back.
The CR men fell 2-1 at Merritt on Friday.
Roman Barnes got the team’s only goal on a penalty kick.
