ATHLETES AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — Golf, football and baseball all feature this week

Ray Hamill/ – Andrew Hunsucker (26) and Gerard Marshall (75).

By Ray Hamill — McKinleyville senior Sofie Sundberg had the round of the week in H-DNL girls golf at Del Norte on Monday, as she moved back to the top of the league standings once agin.

The defending H-DNL champion sot a 94 to pace the field by five strokes and that gets her the nod for our Athlete of the Week, sponsored by College of the Redwoods Athletics.

Sundberg stormed her way to the league title last season and will be one of the favorites to win it all again this year.

She shot a 100 in the opening round of league play at Beau Pre last week, which was good enough for third on the day behind Arcata’s Morgan Ford (98) and Sagen Sarchett (99).

However, Sundberg responded in style this week to take the dominating victory.

Our boys athlete of the week honors go to a pair of Hoopa teammates who have been setting the tone early in the season on the Warriors football team and were front and center once again over the weekend with a clutch second-half performance at Fort Bragg.

Seniors Andrew Hunsucker and Gerard Marshall wore down the Timberwolves defense with their relentless one-two punch at running back and they have the Warriors rolling as league play approaches.

Our team of the week, meanwhile, is the young Northern Humboldt Steelheads 10Us, who have been on fire this summer.

The Steelheads, who are playing as a team for the first time this year, are a perfect 8-0 and have now won back-to-back tournaments, including this past weekend’s Medford Jamba Patriot Day Tournament.

The defending league champ got going with a big round in Crescent City on Monday.

Two rounds into the new season, the Mack senior now holds a four-stroke lead in the league standings.

The H-DNL girls will travel to Fortuna for round three of league play.

“We went to the power game,” head coach Floyd “Cowboy” Billings said after his team pulled away in the second half at Fort Bragg. “We went to the jumbo package.”

And that worked thanks to Hunsucker snd Marshall and their relentless running behind a physical line.

With several players making big contributions, the Steelheads enjoyed another successful weekend in Medford.

The young players played well in all facets of the game, with some strong pitching and defense and plenty of offense.

They averaged more than 10 runs a game and outscored their four opponents by a combined 42-14.
