FOOTBALL ROUNDUP — Warriors, Panthers win big; Cats, Cubs renew their rivalry

Ray Hamill/HumboldtSports.com – The McKinleyville Panthers kicked off their season at home to Anderson on Friday night.

By Ray Hamill — The Del Norte Warriors continued to roll with another big win on Friday night, while the McKinleyville Panthers kicked off their season in style on what was another busy night for H-DNL teams.

The Warriors improved to 2-0 with a 42-0 win at Piedmont in the East Bay, with all of their points coming in the first half.

They have now outscored their first two opponents 98-0 before halftime.

The Panthers also dominated in the first half and opened up a 33-0 lead before halftime on the way to a 40-0 win over Anderson at Mack High.

Also in action on Friday night, the Fortuna Huskies had a big night on the defensive side of the ball, but it wasn’t enough to secure a victory.

Fortuna gave up just one touchdown, but lost 6-0 at Justin-Siena in Napa.

The Huskies are now 0-2, but head coach Mike Benbow felt it was a much better performance by his team on the defensive side of the ball.

Also in action on Friday night, the Ferndale Wildcats bounced back from a season-opening loss at Fall River last week to beat South Fork 35-21 in Miranda.

The Cubs dropped to 0-2, but head coach Karl Terrell felt his young team showed a lot of improvement from last week.

The Cats, who improved to 1-1, had five different running backs who ran the ball effectively.

We will have more on that game on Saturday.

In JV action, Del Norte defeated Piedmont 35-2 to go to 2-0.

The McKinleyville JVs also improved to 2-0 with a 40-0 win over Anderson, while the Ferndale Wildcats defeated Fort Bragg 35-14 in Miranda and also are now 2-0.

After narrowly losing at University a week ago, the Fortuna JVs improved to 1-1 with a big 41-13 win at Justin-Siena.

Three more H-DNL varsity teams will be in action on Saturday.

St. Bernard’s (0-1) hosts Hoopa (1-0) at 1 p.m. and Arcata (0-1) hosts Sutter at the Redwood Bowl at 7 p.m.
