Potential $200K jackpot up for grabs on opening day at Ferndale

Six days of horse racing action in Ferndale kicks off on Friday afternoon, with a massive jackpot potentially up for grabs.

The 126th annual Humboldt County Fair opened on Thursday and will feature Friday, Saturday and Sunday horse racing programs on back-to-back weekends.

Opening day gets under way at 3:15 p.m. and one lucky fans could walk with a $192,278 Pick-Six jackpot.

The pot started to build in June at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton, and since then there has not been a single perfect Pick-Six ticket through meets at Pleasanton and Sacramento.

And that’s good news for local horse racing fans, one of whom could walk away with $200K on opening day if they can nail all six winners in the “Gold Rush” jackpot wager.

A strong stable of trainers and horses from the Bay Area and Oregon is expected, as well as a solid roster of jockeys.

The six days of racing will feature almost exclusive thoroughbred action, sprinkled with a few quarter horse events, with six thoroughbred races slated for the opening day.

Despite smaller field sizes at Ferndale, the Humboldt County Fair has yielded huge payouts in recent years.

In 2019, one lucky fan received a $292,300 payout, and in 2021 one lucky fan walked away with $206,883.

  1. I was alive in the pick six on Saturday August 20th 2022 going into the 7th and final race. Holding my ticket for dear life in the ferndale stands. A 20 cent ticket I bought for 176 bucks or so. The 3 needed to win to win 205k. I had 4 out of the 7 horses. The 3, Gemma Royal , The Betting favorite at one point stood still at the gate and was dead last the entire way. I still had the 5 Timberlake Gage selected and won 795 bucks by hitting the pick six. Just not the right horse at the end. Once in a lifetime ticket I had. I sure thought it was going to hit. That’s the way it goes sometimes.
