It was another tragic weekend at the Ferndale horse races.
On the second of three scheduled weekends of horse races this year, a second horse had to euthanized.
The California Horse Racing Board reported on Wednesday that 12-year-old quarter horse gelding Visual Display had to be put down after the first race on Sunday.
According to a press release announcing the news, Visual Display suffered a musculoskeletal injury.
Visual Display is the second racing death at Ferndale in the three-week meet.
Six-year-old mare Arctic Fire also died after the fourth Race on opening day on Aug. 23, also because of a musculoskeletal injury.
According to the press release, Visual Display is the 55th horse death reported in California this year.
The 2024 horse racing in Ferndale continues this weekend with two more days of action to close out the meet.
The meet, which annually coincides with the Humboldt County Fair, was expanded to include three weekends of racing this year.
The final weekend of action will be a standalone after the fair ended this past weekend.
Meet officials have announced that the weekend racing will be free of admission for fans and will include a free concert after the racing concludes on Saturday evening, with Humboldt County’s The Undercovers scheduled to perform.
