By Ray Hamill — The opening night of the new high school football season is now just two weeks away, with eight of the nine local varsity teams scheduled to kick off on the weekend of Aug. 26/27.
Seven of those teams will open on that Friday night, with two all-local showdowns scheduled.
The Eureka Loggers will host the Arcata Tigers in a game that features two new head coaches — Mike Marcelli of Eureka and Matt Magers of Arcata — while the Hoopa Warriors will travel to Miranda to take on South Fork.
They will return to eight-man football at Laytonville in week three.
The Del Norte Warriors will also open the new season at home and will play Kelseyville under the Friday night lights on Aug. 26.
Fortuna and Ferndale will both open on the road on the same night.
The Wildcats will play at Fall River and Fortuna plays at University.
St. Bernard’s wil also open that weekend and will host St. Vincent de Paul on Saturday Aug. 27 at 2 p.m.
The McKinleyville Panthers, meanwhile, have a scheduled bye on opening weekend and will kick off their campaign a week later when they host Anderson on Friday night.
