Ruiz shuts out the Kings, as Crabs keep rolling

Humboldt Crabs Baseball – Caleb Ruiz delivers a pitch against the West Coast Kings on Sunday.

Caleb Ruiz held the West Coast Kings’ bats to just two hits in a complete-game victory on Sunday, as the Humboldt Crabs closed out the weekend series with a 2-0 win at the Arcata Ball Park.

The win secured a three-game series sweep and was the second straight shutout, with the Crabs also winning 8-0 on Saturday night.

Ruiz was in command throughout and didn’t allow any walks while striking out nine.

For the season, the former St. Bernard’s Crusader has remarkably allowed just four walks in 43.2 innings and his ERA is now 2.26.

Tyler Davis capped a big weekend by driving in both of the Crabs’ runs in the bottom of the first inning to give his team an early cushion, and with Ruiz dominating on the mound it would prove to be all they would need.

Ruiz leads the team in wins and is now 5-0 on the summer.

Two other local pitchers also featured for the Crabs this weekend.

Hayden Bode and Cameron Saso each threw one scoreless inning in relief.

Bode allowed one hit and struck out one, while Saso allowed one hit and struck out two.

Davis provided the offensive highlight of the game with his team-leading fifth home run of the summer.

Aaron Perez led the way at the plate and finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Lane Oliphant and Colby Lunsford each added two hits.

The win was the 14th in 15 games for the red-hot Crabs, who are now 22-9 on the summer.

The Crabs will try to keep that impressive run going when they hot a two-game midweek series against the Medford Rogues, with game one set for Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
