By Ray Hamill — St. Bernard’s baseball head coach Matt Tomlin has been named MaxPreps California Baseball Coach of the Year, while two local players have been named to the website’s Baseball Teams of the Year.

Tomlin, who led the Crusaders to the H-DNL’s first-ever North Coast Section and NorCal championship double this past spring, was recognized as the top coach in the entire state, small and large schools combined.

On the way to the NorCal title, his team defeated Central out of Fresno, a school of more than 4,000 students.

The full story, which was published on Wednesday, was written by MaxPreps’ Kevin Askeland and can be accessed here.

Tomlin also was recently named Humboldt Sports High School Coach of the Year.

Two H-DNL players were also honored by MaxPreps after outstanding spring seasons.

St. Bernard’s Nick Dugan, who will play at Stanford, was named to the MaxPreps California All-State Baseball First Team, while Eureka’s Myles Standish was included on the second team.

Dugan played a pivotal role in the Crusaders’ success both on the mound and at the plate.

The SB senior pitcher was 12-0 with an ERA of 0.82 and struck out 137 batters in 60 innings.

At the plate, he batted batted .524 with 41 RBIs, seven doubles and seven home runs.

Standish also had an outstanding season pitching for the Eureka Loggers and led them to a co-Big 5 championship, along with Arcata.

Interestingly, he was included as an outfielder on the MaxPreps team despite a huge season on the mound that saw him go 8-4 with a 2.28 ERA and record 126 strikeouts in 64.1 innings.

He batted .316 and had 24 RBIs, eight doubles and two home runs.

Standish will be back next year for his senior season.

  1. Tomlin earned every bit of the accolades over the course of many seasons…

…if there is an award for being the top two-sport coach, Tomlin would be a candidate…
