By Ray Hamill — The Arcata Ball Park is getting some necessary upgrades.

For the past year, Humboldt Crabs president David Sharp and the City of Arcata have been working with state senator Mike McGuire to secure funds to make some long-needed improvements to the iconic ball park.

On Wednesday night, before the Crabs game with the Solano Mudcats, Senator McGuire presented the team with a check for $1 million from the state for the upgrades.

“We’re very fortunate and very grateful to Senator McGuire for listening to our needs and hearing the stories from fans and working with the City of Arcata to make it a reality,” Sharp said. “It’s something we’ve needed to do for a long time.”

The funds will be used for a few different projects, including bringing the ballpark into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The upgrades will also include building a new entrance plaza to provide better access, and well as a new facade and removal of the old media booth.

“The entrance, as it is, is a narrow stair case and our vision is to open up that area to allow more fans line up in front of the ball park,” Sharp said.

Easing that congestion will also allow the Crabs to start selling game-day tickets at the ball park again.

The city installed new bleachers and a new media booth in 2019, but lacked the funds at the time for the necessary additional upgrades.

Sharp is hoping construction can begin in the spring of 2023 and be completed in time for next summer.

As for the 2022 season, Sharp believes it has been another successful summer so far for the longtime local club.

“The team had a very tough June schedule, and that was our goal from the outset, to put together a competitive schedule so our players can face the best competition,” he said. “Hopefully there’ll be no more rainouts and we’ll see good weather to close out the season.

“It’s been another good season of Crabs baseball and we tip our caps to our fans for weathering the rainouts and the road trips.”

The Crabs take on the Menlo Park Legends on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m., before closing out the weekend series between the two clubs on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
