The Arcata Tigers are going where no H-DNL tennis team has ever gone before.
The H-DNL champions opened the North Coast Section Division-II playoff tournament with a big win on Tuesday, defeating Marin Academy 5-2 at McKinleyville High School.
The win was the first ever for an H-DNL tennis team in the NCS postseason and sees the Tigers advance to Thursday’s second round.
The Tigers split the four singles matches, and then swept all three doubles matches to secure the win.
And they did it against a higher seed.
Seeded No. 10 out of 15 playoff teams, the H-DNL champs knocked off the No. 7 seed for the win.
Following his recent individual league championship, Nick Bosch won for Arcata at No. 1 singles, defeating Mark Schulist, 6-4, 6-3.
His teammate Lootah Hall also won at No. 4 singles, getting the better of Hunter Price, 6-3, 6-0.
Also winning for Arcata, Mathias Severn and Bodhi Jennings teamed up to beat Marin Academy’s Oskar Mason and Jack Rockwell, 6-1, 6(1)-7, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles, while Bruin Nave and Miles Schmidt defeated Sam Nemar and Alex McDermott, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles.
The Tigers won No. 3 doubles by forfeit.
Also competing for Arcata, Finn Murphy lost to Marin Academy’s Luke Aspatore, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, in a close-fought battle at No. 2 singles, while Aiden Waters fell to Eli Febbo, 6-4, 7-6(2), at No. 3 singles.
The Arcata boys will try for another upset when they travel to play No. 2 seed University in San Francisco on Thursday afternoon.
The historic victory comes after another big regular season for the Tigers, who won all 12 of their league matches and swept all six H-DNL singles matches.
Saw them at their “Training Table”, the Big Blue Cafe yesterday morning. I thought the volume of food they had for breakfast would make them sluggish. I was wrong. Good luck against University.
