Tomlin voted Humboldt Sports Coach of the Year

By Ray Hamill — Matt Tomlin has been voted the 2021 Humboldt Sports Coach of the year after another outstanding year on the sidelines.

Tomlin, who coached girls basketball, baseball and football at St. Bernard’s in 2021, is coming off one of his best years ever in the latter.

Tomlin’s team was the most improved squad in the fall and played a dominating physical brand of football on the way to sweeping both Eureka and Fortuna in league play.

And, as always, he continues to earn the respect of his peers and sports fans all around the North Coast, pulling in 18.2 percent of the votes cast among the 16 finalists.

Sac State baseball Reggie Christiansen was second in the voting (14.6 percent) after another outstanding season coaching the Hornets in 2021, while Hoopa High’s Ryan Colegrove was third (10.2 percent) after leading the Warriors to an undefeated spring season.

Del Norte football coach Nick White and Arcata cross country and track and fi4eld coach James Washington rounded out the top five.
