By Ray Hamill — 2021 was a year the Eureka Loggers won’t easily forget on the soccer field.

In fact they had two memorable seasons in one year, with a senior-heavy squad going undefeated in the spring and a new-look lineup coming together quickly in the fall on the way to a North Coast Section championship.

And all of that did not go unnoticed by sports fans here on the North Coast, who have voted the Loggers the 2021 Humboldt Sports Team of the Year.

Just a handful of votes separated the top three teams in what was the closest races in our four end-of-year awards categories.

The Loggers pulled in 16.7 percent of the votes cast among the 14 finalists, followed by the Fortuna High boys soccer team (15.1 percent) and the McKinleyville 12-year-old Little League All-stars (14.7).

The Fortuna boys won an eighth straight league title in the fall and stretched their unbeaten run to 63 games before losing in the NCS championship, while the Mack all-stars made another deep run in the state playoffs.

The Del Norte High football team edged Hoopa High softball for fourth.
