The Arcata Tigers suffered their first loss of the boys basketball season at the Red Bluff tournament over the weekend, falling to Pleasant Valley 75-50 in the championship game.
The Tigers, who dropped to 9-1 with the loss, matched a very good Vikings team for much of the game, but eventually wore down.
Pleasant Valley improved to 10-1 with the win.
It wasn’t all bad news for the Tigers, who should benefit from the experience of a tough early-season matchup when the Big 5 tips off next month.
“We went toe to toe with them for a good three quarters and two minutes,” Arcata head coach Kellen Maynard said.
It didn’t help when senior leader Kai Purcell, who was enjoying a standout tournament, fouled out late in the third quarter after picking up a pair of quick fouls before Maynard could sub him out.
“That was a blow,” the first-year head coach said.
Purcell scored a team-high 10 points in the loss and was named to the all-tournament team along with teammates Carson Tucker, Alex Jioras and Brandon Bento-Jackson.
Shane Purcell added nine points in the championship game, while Bento-Jackson and Sam Trewartha each finished with seven points.
Bento-Jackson also had a big tournament, while the coach was particularly happy with the play of Shane Purcell and Sam Trewartha.
“I was pleased with the way Shane and Sam finished out the tournament,” he said.
Next up, the Tigers will open the Marin Catholic tournament against Central Catholic on Dec. 27.
