By Ray Hamill — The Del Norte Warriors will kick off the North Coast Section Division-5 football playoffs at home to Archie Williams on Friday night, and head coach Nick White knows his defense will have to find a way to limit the visitors’ big playmakers.
“They’re big at receiver and their quarterback throws a really good deep ball,” White said of their opponents. “They’re fairly athletic at running back and they’ve got some playmakers, so it’ll be tough for us defensively.”
If the No. 2 seed Warriors play up to the level they have played at for most of the season, however, they should be up for that challenge, especially at home in what will be a tough environment for the visitors.
Archie Williams — formerly Sir Francis Drake High — will be making a long trip from Marin County and playing in a Del Norte stadium that is expected to be rocking for the home team’s first playoff game since their state championship appearance in December of 2019.
“We’re pumped,” White said.
The Warriors have played exceptional football down the stretch and come into the postseason firing on all cylinders.
And preparation this week has been going well.
“We’ve had a great week of practice,” White said. “We’re excited to play a playoff game and excited to move on to the next part of our season.”
Del Norte is 8-1 and has not lost a game since opening night, while the Peregrine Falcons are 7-3.
And the game plan for the Warriors is straightforward, on both sides of the ball.
“We need to limit the big plays, the deep ball,” White said. “That’ll be the big thing for us defensively, and offensively we need to control the line of scrimmage and the tempo of the game.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on KPOD 97.9 FM.
