ATHLETES AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — Warriors poised for big playoff run

Ray Hamill/ – The Del Norte Warriors shut out Fortuna for the second time this season on Saturday night.

By Ray Hamill — The Del Norte Warriors feature prominently in this week’s athletes and team of the week, sponsored by College of the Redwoods Athletics.

Last weekend, Del Norte shut out Fortuna for the second time this season on the way to clinching the Big 4 championship outright, and the Warriors are playing outstanding football right now and poised for a big playoff run.

And that makes them our team of the week.

But that’s not all.

Senior running back Caleb Dodson has been on fire since returning to the lineup from injury two weeks ago, running for three touchdowns in back-to-back weeks.

And that gets him the nod for one of our athletes of the week.

Rounding out our honors this week, the Arcata duo of Kyra Alway and Aimee Reiner were crowned H-DNL tennis doubles champions this week, capping an outstanding season for both.

The Warriors possess a relentless running game with multiple talented backs racking up big yards and plenty of TDs behind a physically dominating offensive line.

And, as head coach Nick White said, everyone involved is on the same page and playing a role.

No one more so than Dodson, who finished with 237 yards on 18 carries at Fortuna on Saturday night.

Dodson is one of two dynamic Del Norte backs, along with RJ Loftin who was named our athlete of the week two weeks ago.

The Tigers have dominated on the H-DNL tennis courts this year, thanks in large part to the play of Alway and Reiner, who were crowned league doubles champs on Tuesday.

The two teammates combined to defeat Northcoast Prep’s Nai’a Ryman and Alex Riggs in the decider, winning decisively 6-0, 6-1.

This follows teammate Keona DeArmond’s championship at No. 1 singles late last week.

Alway and Reiner will now advance to the North Coast Section doubles tournament later this month.

To say it’s been an impressive season on the gridiron for the Warriors is an understatement.

Not only has the school’s varsity team won seven straight games on the way to a Big 4 championship and what will be a very high seed for the NCS playoffs, but the JVs have arguably been even more impressive.

Under first-year head coach Tanner Forkner, the Del Norte junior varsity squad is now 8-0 and can close out an undefeated season with a victory over Eureka on Friday night.

Del Norte football appears to be in pretty good shape these days.
