It took the Eureka girls a little while to get going on Wednesday night, but once they did there was no stopping them.
Playing their final game of the regular season, the Loggers scored four second-half goals and ran out to a comfortable 5-0 win at Fortuna in soccer.
Head coach Tommy Learmouth changed up the formation of his team for the game, with eyes on a deep playoff run, and he was more than happy with the way his players responded.
“We had some growing pains, but they played through it and kept their heads up,” the coach said. “It was our best game of the season.”
It was also a great way to respond to last week’s disappointing loss against league champs Arcata.
“It’s really easy to come into a game after a loss like that and have a letdown,” the coach said. “And they took it as a challenge to get better.”
Ella Tollefson, who played one of her best games of the season, scored twice in the win, with Ginny Brooks, Kira Morris and Saedra Joseph each also finding the back of the net.
“Maia Hales and Payton Goodman were incredible,” Learmouth said of his central defenders who have performed at a consistently high level all season. “And Lila Ekholdt, even though she didn’t score, was all over the field setting up her teammates.”
Angelina Conant and Kaitlin Giacone each also closed out the regular season with a strong performance.
“We had a lot of players play really well,” Learmouth said.
The Loggers will find out their playoff seeding and opponent on Sunday before kicking off the postseason next week.
