ATHLETES AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — McGoldrick, Schauerman continue to impress

By Ray Hamill — Consistency has been the key for this week’s two Humboldt Sports Athletes of the Week, sponsored by College of the Redwoods Athletics.

Up in Crescent City, Sam Schauerman has been a force for Del Norte on the football field since breaking into the team as a sophomore on the Warriors’ state run two years ago.

Schauerman was dominant once again in a big win over Fortuna last Friday night, playing a pivotal role in limiting the Huskies run game.

Arcata junior Ai-Lan McGoldrick also has been a consistent standout in cross country this fall, rediscovering the form that established her as one of the top local runners as a freshman two years ago.

Consistency has also been a key for the Arcata football team in recent weeks, with the Tigers winning four straight games and taking control of the Little 4 with a key victory over McKinleyville last week.

And that earns them our team of the week honors.

Sam Schauerman

Del Norte Football, Senior

Linemen don’t always get the respect they deserve in media circles, but it’s difficult to deny Schauerman has been a force for the Warriors this season.

The senior lineman was outstanding against Fortuna last weekend and played a key role in nullifying the Huskies’ run game.

The Warriors won the game 34-0.

Arcata Cross Country, Junior

McGoldrick won for the third straight week in H-DNL cross country at the Arcata Marsh on Wednesday, comfortably out-pacing her closest competitors.

The Tigers junior is back to her best and has won every time she has competed in the H-DNL this fall, making her the favorite for this year’s league title.

TEAM OF THE WEEK

Arcata Football

The Tigers are the frontrunners in the Little 4 this season and will try to make it three straight conference wins when they play at Hoopa on Friday night.

Possessing the most electrifying offense on the North Coast, they are also the most entertaining local team to watch this year.

With senior quarterback Shane Purcell picking apart opposing defenses and a plethora of talented and consistent weapons to throw to — as well as a line that gives him ample time to throw the ball — the Tigers should compete for a lot more than just a conference crown in 2021.

Head coach Jamal Jones deserves a lot of credit for how he has built the program back up in recent years.
