The Arcata Tigers finally put together two good halves of football on the way to a 40-6 victory at Hoopa on Friday night.
The victory was the fifth straight for the Tigers, who improved to 5-2 on the season and are 3-0 in the Little 4 halfway through conference play.
“It was a solid game,” said Arcata head coach Jamal Jones, whose players have struggled to play a complete game this season. “We wanted to put an emphasis on playing two solid halves and I felt good about that. The kids played hard.”
Senior Shane Purcell continued to dominate through the air, throwing for five touchdowns in the win, which now gives him a very impressive 26 TD passes in the Tigers’ five-game winning streak.
Ty Franklin also continued to impress and pulled in two TD catches, while Carson Tucker, Oscar Carlson and Alex Jioras each had one.
Wiyot Tierney had arguably his best game of the season with a TD run and an interception.
“I though Wiyot Tierney had a solid all-around night,” Jones said. “He made big plays on both sides of the ball.”
Tierney was one of several players to pick up their game in the absence of two starters, including starting running back Alex Gorge.
No scoring details were immediately available for Hoopa.
“Hoopa played hard,” Jones said. “We’ve got a lot of respect for them. They’re building their program, and we’ve been there. Props to them for continuing to play hard.”
