Former H-DNL soccer players impressing at the collegiate level

Pacific University Athletics – Conor Barres reacts during a game this season.

By Ray Hamill — Former Eureka Logger Klayre Barres is among several H-DNL soccer players playing at the collegiate level this year and has had an immediate impact at Chico State.

Barres, who graduated from Eureka earlier this year, has started all eight games this season, playing 90 or more minutes in five starts.

That’s impressive for any freshman, but especially so at the Division-II level.

And Barres’ new team is doing well, with a record of 5-1-2, including a 1-1 tie at Humboldt State two weeks ago.

Her older brother, Conor Barres, is also enjoying a productive season at the collegiate level, and has started nine of 10 games for Pacific University in Oregon.

After starting just twice in his first two seasons with the Division-III program, Conor has won a starting role this year and has been a key contributor on defense.

Conor has appeared in all but one of the team’s 11 games, including nine starts, and has helped Pacific to a 4-6-1 record.

Closer to home, former Arcata High standout Claire Bareilles is enjoying a good season at Humboldt State.

The senior midfielder, who transferred back to the North Coast after spending the 2017 and 2018 seasons at Simon Fraser, has started all nine games for the 3-2-4 Jacks, seeing more and more playing time as the season has progressed,

Two former Eureka Loggers are currently playing at the Division-I level.

Junior forward Olivia Stone is in her third year at Portland State and has seen substantial playing time off the bench this season for the 3-6-1 Vikings.

Her former Loggers teammate, Keylei Carroll, is also at the Division-I level, playing at UC Davis after graduating from Eureka this year.

Two other 2021 Eureka graduates, Brynn Hales and Aquene Tollefson, are both also settling in at the collegiate level and have made a couple of appearances for their new teams.

Hales plays at Southern Oregon, and Tollefson is at Dominican University.

At the community College level, Madeline Costa is still enjoying life playing for Lake Tahoe, and has been joined on the roster by a former H-DNL rival, Eureka’s Madison Evansizer.

Costa, who graduated from St. Bernard’s in 2019, is starring in goal for the Coyotes and leads the Golden Valley Conference in goals-against-average (1.43) in her sophomore season.

Costa has started seven games and appeared in eight for 6-4-1 Coyotes.

Evansizer, meanwhile, is a 2020 Eureka High grad, and the freshman defender has seen action in six games with her new team.

College of the Redwoods Athletics – Gio Magdaleno

Costa, Evansizer and the Lake Tahoe women are scheduled to play at College of the Redwoods on Oct. 26.

They recently got the better of the Corsairs 10-0, one of Costa’s four clean sheets on the season.

Costa, however, is not the only H-DNL player playing well between the college posts this season.

At College of the Redwoods, Ferndale graduate Gio Magdaleno currently leads the GVC in saves with 36.

Magdaleno, who had not played soccer since his travel team days four years ago, has started seven of nine games for the CR men.

The Corsairs are now 0-7-2.

On the CR women’s team, Fortuna’s Arlette Cruz has quickly settled in at the collegiate level playing goalkeeper and also leads the conference in saves with 62.

The CR women are 1-5-2.

The 2021 Fortuna graduate also is third in the conference in save percentage (.689).

Two former Arcata standouts are also currently teammates at Siskiyous.

Connor Olson has started all nine games for the 3-5-1 Eagles this season, while Arthur Frye has started five games, with four more appearances off the bench.
