BOYS SOCCER ROUNDUP — Warriors, Panthers tie; Tigers top Eureka

File photo – The Arcata Tigers and Eureka Loggers met for the second time this season on Wednesday night.

A big second half lifted the Del Norte Warriors to a 3-3 tie at home to McKinleyville on Wednesday, their second straight tie in league play.

The home team scored three times in the second half after trailing 3-0 at the break, with Yahir Alanis getting the rally started from the penalty spot after teammate Pedro Garcia was adjudged to have been tripped in the box.

Alanis then assisted on the second goal, setting up Mario Ledezma with a through ball, before Lenny Aguilar tied things up when he headed home on a Rodolpho Ramirez cross.

“I’m proud of the boys for showing character and zeal to come back from three goals down, but we have got to tighten our defense and be less error prone,” Del Norte head coach David Sanyaolu said. “Props to Mack for taking their chances and playing a good game. We look forward to playing them again.”

Rylee Collart, Logan Maher and Daniel Jones all scored in the first half as the visiting Panthers got the game off to a flying start.

“We just did well finishing our chances in the first half,” head coach Ryne Deppe said.

Rocco Previde and Gino Dolson-Gonzalez both played well for McKinleyville.

The tie was the second in two league games for Mack, while Del Norte is now 0-1-2.

Arcata 2, Eureka 1

The ever-dangerous Ethan Gyenis scored a goal in either half at Albee Stadium on Wednesday evening, as the visiting Tigers won 2-1.

Gyenis opened the scoring on an Izaiah Grosveld cross in the first half, and scored the winner late in the game on a Mathias Severn through ball after freshman Will Mooney had tied things up for the Loggers.

“It was a dog fight and I really enjoyed it,” Arcata head coach John Davidson said. “It really was a fun game.”

Arcata improved to 1-1 in the Big 5 with the victory.

Luis Romero and Vic Vang both impressed in midfield for the Loggers, who dropped to 0-1-2 in league play.

“The team played well,” Eureka head coach Eddie Garcia said. “We dominated the second half, but a mistake cost us in the last five minutes.”
