By Ray Hamill — It was a memorable return to play for one local program this past week, as well as an impressive season debut for a McKinleyville junior, as football and golf take center stage in this week’s Humboldt Sports Athletes and Team of the Week, sponsored by College of the Redwoods Athletics.
The St. Bernard’s JV football team played its first game in four years and had an impressive return with an 18-12 win at Fort Bragg.
And that earns the Crusaders the nod for this week’s team of the week.
Individually, two H-DNL athletes stood out this past week with big performances.
In girls golf, McKinleyville’s Sofie Sundberg led the way at the league opening event on Monday, shooting a 108 to pace the field by five strokes.
In football, meanwhile, Fortuna senior Logan Miranda continued his impressive start to the season as the Huskies stretched their record to 2-0 with a big 34-12 win over Ferndale.

The Crusaders JVs are back, and don’t underestimate the importance of that for the future of St. Bernard’s football.
They returned with a big road win over Fort Bragg on Friday night, and more impressively they did so with just 13 players on hand.
