Sundberg leads the way as H-DNL girls golf returns

McKinleyville’s Sofie Sundberg led the way in the opening round of the new H-DNL girls golf season on Monday.

Playing at Beau Pre Golf Course in McKinleyville, Sundberg shot a 108 to pace the field by five strokes and take the early lead in the season standings.

Eureka’s Ileah Brannon and Arcata’s Avary Meadows each shot a 113, tying for the second best score on the day.

Brannon’s round was key in helping the Eureka girls to the best team score of the day.

The Loggers shot a 491, eight strokes better than the Tigers (499), with McKinleyville a distant third (542).

St. Bernard’s Allyson Hagler also had a good day, finishing fourth overall with a round of 121, while Eureka’s Isis Poteet shot a 124 for fifth.

Eureka had four top-10 finishes on the day, including Gracie Christian, who tied for sixth with a 125, and Mia Lopez, who shot a 129 to tie for ninth.

Arcata’s Morgan Ford matched Christian with a 125, while teammate Sagen Sarchett placed eighth (128), and Del Norte’s Jo Heuberger tied Lopez with a 129.

The H-DNL girls golf season continues next week in Fortuna.
