UPDATED on Friday afternoon

By Ray Hamill — Six of the nine H-DNL varsity football teams will be in action this weekend, including four of them here on the North Coast.

Postponements, cancelations and poor air quality have resulted in several changes to the schedule this week, but it finally appears to be set with four games on tap involving local teams, including two all-North Coast showdowns.

Del Norte (0-1) was scheduled to get the action under way on Friday night, with North Medford (0-0) coming to town for a game that was moved from Oregon on Thursday because of the air quality in the Medford area.

The game, however, has been canceled due to COVID protocols.

The JVs will still play at 5 p.m.

Also on Friday night, Ferndale (0-1) makes the short trip to Fortuna (1-0) for the annual Milk Can showdown.

And with no JV game scheduled, the varsity contest gets under way at 7 p.m.

The McKinleyville Panthers, meanwhile, will try to make it two straight wins to start the new season when they travel to Anderson for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff, with the Mack JVs (1-0) playing beforehand.

On Saturday afternoon, Arcata (0-0) travels to St. Bernard’s (0-1) for a 2 p.m. kickoff in what could be the game of the weekend between two teams that appear evenly matched this season.

The St. Bernard’s JVs (0-0) will play at Fort Bragg on Friday night.

Also on Saturday, South Fork (0-0) is scheduled to play at Branson in eight man football at 1 p.m.

Both Hoopa (0-0) and Eureka (0-0) are idle again this weekend and will open their seasons next week.
