Thomas’ no-hitter highlights big week for Giants

The Northern Humboldt Giants have been the best American Legion baseball team on the North Coast this summer and they continued to prove that this week.

The 17U club swept a pair of all-local doubleheaders, beating the Humboldt Eagles 17Us, 8-0 and 11-0, on Tuesday, and following that with 12-10 and 5-0 victories over the Southern Humboldt 76ers 19U squad on Wednesday.

Ethan Thomas pitched a no-hitter in the 5-0 win over the 76ers, allowing just three walks and striking out seven.

Thomas, who will be a junior in the fall, was impressive for a young Del Norte High team this past spring and has carried that momentum into the summer season with the Giants.

At the plate, Jared Dixon and Ty Ghisetti each had two hits, including a double, while Austin Brown, Jason DeShaun and Thomas also had a hit.

Wyatt Wilson pitched five innings for the 76ers and took the loss.

Ghisetti also had a big game in the earlier matchup, finishing with three hits as the Giants held off a late surge by the 76ers.

William Bommelyn also had three hits in the win with some quality bunting, while Dixon and Will Mager each added two hits.

DeShaun got the win on the mound, allowing six hits in six innings and striking out eight, while also finishing with a hit, along with teammates Brody Mattz, Alex Gorge and Brown.

Cody Collins had a triple for the 76ers, while Regan Nyberg, Jenner Christiansen, Garrett Christiansen, Vincent Meade and Rylan Lommori each also had a hit.

Meade pitched six innings and took the loss on the mound.

Tuesday’s games

Mattz and Miles Oliver both pitched a shutout against the Eagles.

Oliver threw seven innings in the 8-0 win, while Bommelyn and Brown each had two hits.

Mattz pitched all five innings in the 11-0 win, while Gorge was 3-for-3 and Brown continued to impress with two more hits.
