By Ray Hamill — The McKinleyville All-Stars are district champions.

On Wednesday night, the Mack players capped a big week at the local 8-9-10s tournament in Arcata with another big showing, getting the better of Redwood Empire 10-0 in the championship game.

In three games at the tournament, McKinleyville outscored its three opponents 40-2 and left little doubt as to which was the best team in the district.

Carson Hicks was untouchable on the mound for Mack, tossing four no-hit innings for the victory and striking out six.

For the tournament, the impressive Hicks did not give up a hit in seven innings.

He was also instrumental at the plate, finishing with a pair of hits in Wednesday’s win, as did teammates Teoh Arredondo and Cabella Carper.

Everett  Gruetzmacher, Colton Hawkes, Cyrus Eichin, Breyden Brock, Liam Currell and Jared Brunner each also had a hit.

The loss was the first in four games for the resilient Redwood Empire All-Stars, who had won on three consecutive days to avoid elimination.

They closed out the tournament 3-2, with both losses coming against Mack.

The McKinleyville players will now advance to the section tournament in Yuba City, which gets under way on July 15.

On Tuesday night, RELL won the district 11s tournament.

The local 12-year-old all-stars begin their district tournament in Fortuna on Friday.

Southern Humboldt and Eel River get things started at 4:30 p.m., followed by McKinleyville and Arcata at 7 p.m.

Redwood Empire and Klamath Trinity will play the two winners on Saturday, and the six-team tourney is scheduled to run through next Wednesday at least.
